1. Core Vehicle Diagnostics Terminology

OBD / OBD-II / EOBD

On-Board Diagnostics systems that allow faults to be read and monitored. OBD-II is the standard for vehicles from 1996 onwards, while EOBD is the European equivalent. 

DTC

Diagnostic Trouble Code stored by the vehicle when a fault occurs. 

DLC

Data Link Connector – the 16-pin port used to connect diagnostic tools. 

ECU / TCU / PCM

Electronic Control Unit (engine), Transmission Control Unit and Powertrain Control Module. 

CAN / CAN-FD

Controller Area Network communication protocols used in modern vehicles. CAN-FD allows faster data transfer. 

DoIP

Diagnostics over Internet Protocol – high-speed Ethernet-based diagnostics supported by Smartlink® C. 

J2534 / D-PDU / RP1210

Industry standards for OEM programming via pass-through devices. 

VCI

Vehicle Communication Interface (e.g., Smartlink® C).

Bi-directional Control / Actuation Test

Allows the tool to command components such as valves, fans and pumps. 

Auto-VIN

Automatic Vehicle Identification for faster scanning and report creation. 

Live Data / Data Stream

Real-time information displayed from sensors and ECUs.  

Topology Map

Graphical representation of all connected ECUs within the vehicle. 

Health Report / Quick Test

Automatic full-system diagnostic scan, generating a report for printing or sharing.

Advanced OBD-II code readers supporting OBD-II modes, service resets and core system diagnostics.

Multi-protocol VCI enabling local, remote (SRD) and pass-through diagnostics. 

SRD – Super Remote Diagnosis

3. ADAS – Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

ADAS

Safety systems using radar, camera and ultrasonic sensors requiring precise calibration. Launch UK & Ireland provide ADAS calibration frames and diagnostic integration.

Static Calibration

Performed in a controlled workshop environment with targets and frames.  

Dynamic Calibration

Completed through a structured road-drive procedure. 

Key ADAS abbreviations used by manufacturers:

  • AEB – Automatic Emergency Braking
  • ACC – Adaptive Cruise Control
  • LDW / LKA – Lane Departure Warning / Lane Keeping Assist
  • BSD / BSM – Blind Spot Detection / Blind Spot Monitoring
  • AVM (360°) – Around-View Monitoring / 360° camera

EPB

Electronic Parking Brake reset. 

SAS

Steering Angle Sensor reset.  

DPF

Diesel Particulate Filter regeneration / reset. 

BMS

Battery Management System reset and registration. 

TPMS
