1# If you see a tanker filling the tanks at your local petrol station, come back another day or go to a different station.

Why? When the station’s tanks are being re-filled, sediment is stirred-up which can clog fuel filters and fuel injectors, damaging your car’s performance and possibly necessitating repairs.

2# Does your car key share a place with every other key and key ring you own? If so, you should consider putting on a chain by itself.

Why? Relatively speaking, key rings can get quite heavy, and that weight combined with bouncing while you drive, can wear out the tumblers inside the ignition, which will eventually lead to ignition switch failure. If your ignition key is already beginning to stick when you try to turn on the car, take it as a warning that your ignition switch is about to fail.

3# Park in the shade, or better still, buy a car cover.

Why? As well as making your car look great, paint acts as a defense against the rusting of body panels and ultra-violet rays from the sun break down paint and cause it to become faded. Parking in the shade will increase the longevity of the paint, and a car cover will protect your car from other hazards like branches or bikes as well.

4# Don’t let any exposed panels go without a touch of paint.

Why? Exposed panels will quickly rust, and once having done so will not be easily painted over, or protected. Once there rust will eat through sooner or later, and the repairs will be far more expensive than a bit of paint.

5# Get any small chips or cracks in windscreens repaired as soon as possible.

Why? Even the smallest chip or crack will become larger with time, reducing visibility and structural integrity. Getting a small crack fixed is very easy these days, it will not require you to get the whole screen replaced and the cost of getting it fixed when it is small is much lower than fixing it once it has had time to grow and stretch out.
