In the last few years there have been many advances in EVAP testing for vehicle diagnostics, most notably the introduction of smoke testing for finding system leaks. Where ‘micro-leaks’ (system leaks between 0.5 and 1mm) were near impossible to find before and required the use of a stethoscope to listen for the fault, now smoke testing provides a clear visual indication of the location of the leak.

More notable than the time saving advantages of smoke testing is the safety aspect. As we all know garages and workshops are full of ignition sources and flammable materials, and we must take extreme care when working on vehicles especially when dealing with fuel evaporator systems. An oxygen level of just 11% is all that is needed for ignition, and if you consider that the air we breathe is 21% oxygen – extreme caution must be taken.

Smoke Wizard car diagnostic toolThe Smoke Wizard GLD-40 and GLD-50 models are fully optimised to use inert gas for EVAP testing, and an inert gas pack is sold separately. Using nitrogen, argon or carbon dioxide to force smoke through EVAP systems keeps oxygen levels well below the 11% required for ignition. With the Smoke Wizard inert gas packs you can be assured that you are using one of the safest leak detection tools on the market.
